Two Korean Films to Be Shown in Competition at Cannes

Two Korean movies will be screened in competition of this year's Cannes Film Festival. "Secret Sunshine" by Lee Chang-dong and "Breath" by Kim Ki-duk were invited to the 60th anniversary extravaganza.

Since the first Korean movie, "Chunyang," was introduced in competition in 2000, there have been a string of Korean movies at Cannes, with "Strokes of Fire" in 2002, and "Old Boy" and "Woman Is the Future Of Man" in 2004. The Korean film industry welcomed the news since no Korean movies entered the competition last year. Industry sources expect the two movies to give a much-needed boost to the Korean movie industry, which some say is in crisis.

Meanwhile, Korean actress Jeon Do-yeon will take her first steps on the red carpet in Cannes, while Son Kang-ho notches up his second invitation to the French city in as many years. Last year, "The Host," in which Song starred, was screened as part of the Director's Fortnight at the festival.

"Secret Sunshine" gained a publicity boost from the news. It is to be screened on May 24. Director Lee Chang-dong and stars Jeon Do-yeon and Song will go to France on May 15th. "Breath" is screened on May 26, and director Kim Ki-duk and star Chang Chen will arrive in Cannes on May 16, before the festival kicks off.

Kwon Sang Woo And Song Seung Hun To Appear Together For Their Next Movie

Simultaneously Casted In Director Kim Hae Gon's "Destiny"

After his close friend Song Seung Hun came back from military service, Kwon Sang Woo was casted in the movie "Destiny" (directed by Kim Hae Gon, and produced by MKDK M-net Media Inc.) for his comeback.

The production company MKDK for the movie "Destiny" revealed on the 19th that "after 'Almost Love,' Kwon Sang Woo chose 'Destiny' as his next project. The role he will be playing is the protagonist Jo Chul Joong, comes to a pitiful end because of his endless desires."

Kwon Sang Woo and Song Seung Hun are well-known in the entertainment community as close friends. Song Seung Hun had planned to appear in the drama "Sad Sonata" with Kwon Sang Woo, but because Song Seung Hun's military service issue grew bigger, he was not able to fulfill it as planned. When Kwon Sang Woo was still a rookie actor, they showed dynamic interaction in the movie "Make It Big!"

Director Kim Hae Gon revealed that the reason for his casting was that the image of Kwon Sang Woo, which seems tough but hides a gentleness inside, is just like the dual nature of the character Jo Chul Joong.

Even in the midst of a dispute with his previous agency and rumors of receiving threats from crime organizations, Kwon Sang Woo plans to appear in a drama right after confirming his next movie.

The movie Destiny, which portrays the friendship of four friends and their betrayal, is still in search for the remaining roles and aims to start filming next month on the 21th.

The Story Behind the Filming of “April Snow”

During his interview, Bae Yong Joon revealed some of the story behind the filming of “April Snow”, which took place from early February to late June.

Go Stop: “The scene where I play Go Stop with Son Ye Jin in the hotel room was not acting. It’s was a real situation. During break time I was playing Go Stop with the producer and director, and we decided to add the filming of Son Ye Jin and myself playing Go Stop into the movie. My actual score was more than 100 scores higher than Son Ye Jins, and her line ‘recount to see if you got it right’ was not from a script, but her real response to the situation.”

Heo Jin Ho I: “Director Lee Jae Yong of my previous movie ’Scandal’ is the type of person who has in mind the camera angle, screen size, the actor’s physique and facial expressions in an accurately calculated way when he comes on to the filming set. But Director Heo is the very opposite. He will throw a comment like ‘this might be the scene where Insoo begins to feel attracted to Seo Young.’ And will add ’let’s try the scene with this in mind.’ “

Heo Jin Ho II: “Just because he doesn’t make any specific requests of the actors, it doesn’t mean you can think lightly of him. It may seem like he’s not watching, but he knows exactly what’s going on in the actors’ minds. There was a scene which we had to film over and over again, and I was pretty worn out. He called a break with the comment,’“do you really have to raise your hands that way?’ “

Drinks: The scene where I sit drunk and cry at a BBQ restaurant was not acting, but was a real situation. This was the first time I’ve acted while drinking real alcohol. I get red in the face when I drink, and because of this I never tried acting while really drunk. But this time, I felt I needed to drink if I really wanted to understand Insoo.

“He’s dead.”: This is what Insoo says to his wife about the man she’s been having an affair with when she wakes up from her coma. Although the speech line was short, it was truly difficult to act out. This line had to be the overtone of the underlying joy of the fact that his wife has recovered, the anger he feels about his wife’s affair, and his guilt of his attraction to Seo Young.

Son Ye Jin: She may be young, but her values of life and acting are very sincere and in depth. She’s also an active reader. She was always carrying around a book on the set, and a few days later, she would be carrying around a different book.

Jeon Ji-hyun Cedes Advertising Power to Jang Dong-gun

Consumers no longer feel that Jeon Ji-hyun is the most bankable advertising model and instead name Jang Dong-gun. The interviewees were asked to choose three stars they think are most appealing as commercial models. Jeon, who had always ranked top or second from the top in the biannual survey that started in 2003, fell to fifth place.

Jeon Ji-hyun out, Jang Dong-gun in

Jeon took the top spot five times and second place three times in a total of eight surveys by Brand38, beating out superstars like Lee Young-ae, Lee Hyo-lee, Kim Tae-hee, Song Hye-gyo and Lee Na-young.
